After literally years of hunting, I was recently thrilled to finally find a copy of Katalin Szegedi's delightful A Tarot. Originally published in 1992 (with an accompanying book by Maria Szabo - hence its commonly being referred to as the Szabo/Szegedi Tarot), the tarot was one of Ms. Szegedi's first published works. She has since gone on to become one of Hungary's foremost illustrators, as well as illustrating books for a variety of foreign publishers.

Unfortunately, the deck is apparently exceedingly rare. I thought I'd found one a year or so ago at a Hungarian online used book dealer, but it turned out they'd already sold it and forgot to take it off of the web. In the meantime I made email contact with Ms. Szegedi and she told me that quite a few people had inquired about it, but even she hasn't been able to find a copy in years. She did say, however, that there was a publisher interested in reprinting it in a really beautiful edition for Christmas, but that it was still not a sure thing. She said she'd let me know if it actually happened.

And then just a few weeks ago, a copy of the original edition showed up on a Hungarian auction site I occasionally check. Luckily, I have a business contact in Hungary who was willing to bid on my behalf and we won it (for all of 2000 forints, about $11.76). It really is delightful. Here are some scans:

I'll report back if I get any news about a new edition.

I think I saw that Hungarian site you mentioned. I've been on the lookout for a copy of this since I saw that site (not that, if ever one turns out, I can afford it). I also remember it being mentioned in AT. Someone was relating how he was outbidded for the deck in Ebay (by Truelight!). I noticed that at least 2 other decks with a similar mood (slightly dark-whimsical) and which were less-accessible before had mass market editions published recently - the magical forest and that other one by AGM the name of which I can't remember at the moment; so I hope that new edition will materialize soon.

That would be me - outbid again by Truelighth! Still haven't had a chance to get another one, although this is very very high on my want list. Papoon, you sure have some excellent connections, and you search for the same decks I'm after. Care to share? :hp

Uh oh.. I sure know how to make some friends here on the forum and the collectors world, don't I? :v:cc:z

But yes, I agree with Papoon, it is a lovely deck! Most definately one of my favorites. I was also searching for it for ages until I saw it on Ebay. Congrats on getting one Papoon (and for such a good price!!!)

Don't I wish I had "excellent connections." I'd be happy to share, but about all I actually have to share is the sage wisdom:

Google is your friend.

(And patience.)

Actually, one other thing to share for anyone who wants to keep an eye out, here's a link to the search for "tarot" on the Hungarian Vatera auction site:

This is great news. I'd seen on Facebook and her blog last month (you'll find me in the comments) that the new edition was coming out but, as rylla says, it's finally available.

In an email from Katalin (which she encouraged me to share with the tarot community), she says:

You must know that this new edition is a little bit different from the original.

Firstly, it is much more beautiful :). The images are absolutely unchanged, but printed better. What is different is the author, the title, the publisher, the price and the reverse of the card (I've painted a new back). The size is unchanged, too.

So, here are the details of the new edition:

Title: "A Tarot titkai" (translation: Secrets of the Tarot)
Author: Zsófia Lázár
Painter: Katalin Szegedi
Publisher: Roder-Ocker Publishing, Hungary, 2010
Prize: 3980,- HUF (Hungarian forint) (= 20,- USD)

Shipping (to the USA anyway) is $9.00.

Go get them!

I have no clue...

According to Ms. Szegedi, there will be an English version of her web store shortly. But if you can't wait and don't want to struggle with the Hungarian store, you can email her directly (in English) at <kata at picturebook dot hu> telling her that you would like to order her tarot (and where you live) and she will respond with the total cost and PayPal instructions.

I strongly recommend doing that. I had ordered via her website, and just emailed her as I'd heard nothing - she was aware, but there was a fault on the website. I have now paid her and the deck is on its way. (She answered within the hour !)

(Oh but I got a translation for seeker's message using google translate :

The ordering information has changed. Please check the information provided, and click the Save button to order.

Ah, I was just asking about this deck. I suppose I should've looked around a little more carefully before posing a question .....
