The Ghetto Tarot is a photographic interpretation of the traditional tarot deck in the ghetto. The scenes are inspired by the Rider Waite Tarot deck and are replicated together with a group of Haitian artists called Atis Rezistans (resistant artists) in the Haitian slums using only material that was created locally. On several cards the Haitian artists' art is depicted, it includes symbolism from the Voodoo religion to embody the important meaning of the cards original symbols. Alice Smeets is the photographer.
This is actually a brilliant idea for a deck. I have a friend who runs a small art gallery in Hollywood. She recently traveled to Haiti and returned with a lot of footage that was truly breathtaking. I was also introduced to the art of Karl Jean-Guerly Pétion which I found quite striking. It's powerful to see similar images photographed in the style of the Rider Waite deck.
