I'm thinking I'd like to participate, but I need a call on the rules. While most of the (very little) time I have for artistic endeavor these days is dedicated to photography, I don't do photo-collage and really don't have much interest in photographic tarot. However, in a previous life (metaphorically speaking) I was quite active in art stamping and would love to do a card using that technique. But reading over the rules, the requirement that elements be "original" could well preclude stamping as an allowable technique.

So, what does everyone think? Stamping Yea or Nay?

sorry for my ignorance, but what's stamping? :)

also, list updated with onepotato. :)

Sorry, it's creating graphic compositions using rubber stamps (in my case, usually lots of stamps and hand cut masks) and various coloring techniques. Like this:

Yet another example

those are [expletive] gorgeous! and of course you can join, i mean the project's open to anyone willing to participate. the thread's mood on originality and such seem to have changed much in the last few pages of discussion - plus, there's a lot of gray areas in terms of these things (original art, etc). like what papageno and debra have been saying: just enjoy the experience. so... which card will you be doing? :D

from the rather slow start, this thread really has become something very much interesting. i'm looking forward to seeing your completed artworks.

Yay! I am super excited about this! :ok
Sun it is!

It will be (including the three Suns from my finished decks, and the one from my unfinished) the 10th Sun card that I will create!

For some reason, people choose the Sun card for me more than any other card!

just work within this width-height ratio: 1 by 1.5. for example, you want to work on something with a width of 8 inches, just multiply this by 1.5 (resulting in 12 inches) to get the desirable height for the project. :) the 300 dpi is just when you scan the image, so that when you do decide on printing it, the results won't be pixellated and will (hopefully) retain the crispness of the original. hopefully that helped. :)

What a lot of emotions in these posts, but what a good and possible idea.

(Why not for this collaborative deck, only the major arcana)

Perhaps it is good to have conductor... to make this project real with an artistic value.

If nobody is interested - I am the devil...

My English is so poor, so I need French instructions...

I saw the word 'ratio' and was ready to run away from home.  I read on though, and thanks Blue Toy, I actually understand. :ok Now to find an antique ruler with inches on it.  I can actually convert centremetres into inches but the probability of error is so high that I will dig through my Dad's shed for an old ruler.  I think that I might half-inch (pinch) his old spirit level while I am at it ... I have a passion for it which comes from childhood.  Now that is off topic ... but it is 'collector mind-set' at work.  The ... er ... 'Spirit-level' Deck ... huh humour;)!

you can use cm, just remember to follow the ratio ( again, for example, given a width of 12cm, multiply this by 1.5 to get a height of 18 cm). :)

I am still a bit hesitant, but I guess I will also sign up for this project. I made a card for the Patchwork tarot using photoshop. But I want to try pastels for this one. Not sure how good my art is though for this. Is the theme of the deck still Chimeres and mythological beings?

As for the card, I was thinking Empress, but I see BlueToy is already doing that one. Ok, I also I would like the High Priestess, since that is my soulcard. But I am not sure if I am up to the task. I may have to give that a bit more of a thought.

Editing this again.. I think I rather do Strength.. or Temperance.. hehe. When do I need to say which card I will do? (I guess I am also very fickle).

I saw the PM. Ok, I will join. I just edited my post too. Still not sure on Strength or Temperance though. One of those two I think though. I feel more pulled towards those then the High Priestess.

So the chimeres etc are optional?

I will not attempt to draw any Chimeric beings in my Tower card, anatomy is completely beyond my skill......
I am not aware that Chimeres was a mandatory theme....but if it is, then it's time for the scissors and glue.......I guess I'll incorporate a chemeric being, just to be on the safe side.

yes they're optional, since not everyone seems to be into them. i'll put you under strength for the meantime so you can be more confident in joining. :D

oh my! how about this. write the 3 cards titles in 3 separate pieces of paper, fold them individually, jumble them, then pick one. :D so that it'll have that tarot synchonicity angle thingie.

I did what you suggested, BlueToy. And what I already thought.. the High Priestess came out. Somehow my soulcard wants to be expressed I guess. So please put me down for the High Priestess. I will try not to change my mind again :ok

list updated.

i've also tried laying out some images (just sample ones. old stuff i did, not my entry for this project) so you guys could see which borders would look ok - 2 with black borders, with a coloured and bnw image, and 2 in white, again, with a coloured and bnw image. the dimensions of the images are the same as with the ratio we're doing, and the card size itself as shown is in 3 x 5. i dunno, but for me, so far, it seems black borders do indeed seem to work better.

Um. Can we all vote?  It seems awfully early to vote!  But... I vote white borders because, depending on the medium used, black borders can kill an image.

Watercolor? Shaded pencil drawings?  Black borders are death.

For those with a bold style that would benefit, perhaps a black "frame" around the image itself, within the border.

I'm still working on Justice. I think I'm almost done!

of course we're going to vote! :) i just showed the results of the experiment, but i do have to agree that with some images, white would also look ok. i guess we really should wait until everyone's through so we could all see which is best for the whole deck.

so what are your plans for your card? :)

Well, I have the background. It's words and phrases cut from the newspaper, lots of them, pasted onto the card (I'm working 6" x 9"--I hope it reduces ok!). Getting to Justice involves lots of communicating, and some other struggles, too. What is true? What is fair? What about compassion?

The essentials of the card will be...I think...black silhouettes. That's the part I'm working on now.

I am telling the truth (I always do; lying is hard work !!) I take a hell of a lot of photos and this is based on one I took as a possible for another death card, and decided against.

But how long it will take me to put it togther is a whole nother story :D

just make an image that has the width-height ratio of 1 by 1.5, no theme, just make sure you scan this at a high resolution when you're done (300dpi or higher). :) the free cards can be seen at the list in the first post of this thread. just tell me which one you want to do.

Hello all....................

I am creating my own deck, as I said.

And one decision I took is NOT to number the majors, so it follows neither the TdM system nor RWS. But I am putting the titles on them - all in the same font.

What are we doing here - titles ? numbers ? both ? Neither ?? It could make a difference to how one lays things out in the space available...........

Some of us haven't even started :f.  I have to pin my son down to be body model for my painting.  This always takes some doing, and will especially given that I want him to model in his jocks.  He is very shy about this, though it didn't stop him from dropping his daks at 'boy-bits to face' level in front of me so that I could check out his vasectomy scar.  Some things, I just don't want to see. Cringe .  Fine when he was a baby and I was changing his nappy, but he is nearly 33. No sense of decorum. Now I wonder where that came from?:?

Good god Mythos the whole thing sounds very painful all around.  :s

Must you use pins?

Wouldn't paper clips be enough?

hmmm. i'm not sure i get what you're saying. do you mean you're planning on including the text already as a part of the image? i have no probs with a deck with no numbers. if it's possible, i'd like to request that you guys not put the titles themselves to the image you're making, so that at least, when the cards themselves are being laid out, the titles are more uniform to look at. :)

Ok.  So to recap:

3 x 4.5 or any size at a ratio of 1: 1.5 that can be scanned at 300 whatsis or higher and e-mailed to our BlueFella

No use of material copyright to another

No card name or number on the image itself

Borders to be determined later

Eventually, a statement from You, the Artist, about the card, to be part of the LWB

and

no pressure, no hurry, no worries!

No that's fine. I am delighted not to put the title on myself - makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

debra. i wonder what structure would be best for the text. the one in the AT collab projects seems effective (card description, card meaning, artist's bio).
