ok, so we have black borders, so far. i'm ok with colour coordinating, how about the others? for the theme, i'd like to suggest something along what mythos said (with, erm, weird beings): made-up creatures/beings of lower mythology (creatures and beings as opposed to gods). it might be a good creative/brainstorming exercise. they can be humanoid, or chimaeric (which is also perfect for the cut-and-paste nature of collage) so long as it's new, and has a made-up history too? or would that be too asking much?

I dunno..... I'll wait and see.... :?

But if that's the way we are going, can I put a provisional dibs on death please - the only card I feel really easy with doing and this will be a toughie !

ok! who else wants particular cards? and, would there be a separate design for the title card, as well as the backs, or we'll just take them from one of the artworks?

If everyone would say a few words about the card they make and their ideas about the meaning of that card, I'll put it together with a brief intro--a little white book!

Um. I'm waiting to see how free this is. I think...if there are rules (besides the dimensions) or themes, then I should sit it out.  I'll just wait here on the fence while the rest of you hash it out...let me know when you've decided and if there's a card left, I'll take it :P

Shall we start lobbying Adam for more smileys?  I find they encourage creativity...

Yes that's rather where I stand..... IF I join in I would like to do death - but until I see how complicated and Seriously Artistic it all gets, I am really not sure.... (I am a photocollage person - from my own photos - myself....)

Ok rats. I guess we're choosing cards.

Tantricknite already said he'd like the Star or Moon so if LaLuna takes the Moon then the Knite could do the Star...

I could do Justice, I think.

But maybe we need two decks--the "real artist" deck and the "rest of us" deck LOL

We have had quite a few days of 40C and close.  I think my brain has fried.  Either that, or I am just plain thick ... the latter is definitely probable due to burn-out from current stresses and strains.  I'm getting the impression that this is supposed to be a collage deck from our own photo's ... please correct me if I am wrong somebody ... because, if it  .... I'm out.

If I can use a combination media, then I am in and would like to do the 4 of cups please.

mythos:) ... brain-dead:?

I would love to participate too. And black borders and chimeric beings sounds mighty cool. (or really, any other theme...)

I have no personal choice for a card. In fact I would love it if someone appointed me a card instead. It's a far greater challenge.

Mythos, do as thou wilt as long as, IF you do collage, the images are all your own.

Well, we're rolling I guess!

I wonder if we should start with the majors.  78 is a long row to hoe with a forum that's only about 100 people....

i think any media's ok, i think the people are just suggesting that, if ever people do use photos, it would be advisable to use their own ones - just to be clear on copyright issues and such.

debra wrote: I wonder if we should start with the majors.  78 is a long row to hoe with a forum that's only about 100 people....

yes, maybe it would be good to at least start with the majors (though i hope mythos is still interested in creating a majors card) for a community our size, then maybe if we still have the energy, we could continue on to the minors.

so, just to finalize things, can we come to a consensus as to how the images should be sized? i mean, it can be bigger, but still have to be proportionately the same as the final card size - to minimize cropping. it seems not everyone's into a theme, so i guess let's just leave it open to whatever the creator wants for the card.

the following is a list of the cards and the people who've expressed interest in making them for the project:

Majors

0 Fool
I Magician
II Priestess
III Empress -BlueToy
IV Emperor
V Hierophant
VI Lovers
VII Chariot
VIII Strength (numbering tentative)
IX Hermit
X Wheel of Fortune
XI Justice (numbering tentative) -Debra
XII Hanged Man
XIII Death -Gregory
XIV Temperance
XV Devil
XVI Tower
XVII Star -Tantricknight
XVIII Moon -MrlaLuna
XIX Sun
XX Judgment
XXI World

Cups

4 Mythos

Swords

Wands

Pentacles

Hey PapaG these are wonderful images! Thanks!

I haven't a clue about using a chimera in the Justice card--I've got something else in mind completely. Perhaps I'll just do as I please in a 3 x 5 format and if it doesn't suit, I'll take it elsewhere ;)

a Sphinx (most often featured at the top of the Wheel of Fortune) is Chimeric in nature......just look at the entire pantheon of Egyptian Gods.

Better deal me out.  There isn't a major going that I want to do.  I'm not up for chimeras ... my life is too full of them already.... and I am too depressed and too unhappy and too angry and too hurt and too everything to be able to give my heart and mind to this project.  If I am to be part of it, I need to be able to give my ALL.  My ALL left home and didn't take me with it, nor leave me a forwarding address.

A wonderful member ... she knows who she is, don't you Debra:) ... has suggested that I do the Hanged Man.  Given that I am bang slam smack crash hung up in the middle of a Hanged Man year .... she is on the button .... my button.

So, changeable shirl is back in, with the Hanged Man as my choice.  Sorry to be such a pain in the arse, but life is way to life-ish here.

glad to hear it Mythos, you're in such a tough spot, being a primary care giver.
I also think Deb made a wonderful a suggestion by emphasizing that everybody who participates should approach this with a sense of FUN, so be spontaneous and don't worry so much about feeling pressured to please the critics.

i have to agree. and on that note, i'm sorry if some of my suggestions might have been misconstrued as impositions. :) just to clarify as well: my point with the chimaeric suggestion's to have a look that's a composite from different sources, (say, in collage, a man's head can be attached to a different torso, which in turn has different arms, etc) - but again, that's just a suggestion, and, as not everyone seems to agree in having a theme going, i think it would be better to just leave that open.

i'm glad mythos has agreed to join even if we start working on the majors first. :) any suggestions on what card chronata can work on (she says she's want's someone else to appoint the card to her).

i've also updated the first post of this thread with the list of cards and the participants doing them.

in fact, this might be in line with the lomography movement that seems to be popular nowadays. make it random! with spontaneous shots and weird angles, and such. you'd be surprised how pleasing some of the results can be. ;)

alright already.....jeeeez, talk about peer pressure

my skill with a camera is even worse and I've never used Photoshop, so it'll be a hand drawing.

I'll do The Tower.........the focus is on architecture which is easier to manage than anatomy, so there willl be no Chimeric people or creatures.....that's completely beyond me, besides, The Tower is one of my favorite cards

so........is this 4 x 6  or  3 x 5  ???

I'm going through a lot of dental work at the moment and will be out of commission for at least the next few weeks.......it takes a lot out of me and leaves me feeling very weak and wonky (uuuugh)

BlueToy, we need guidance!

Is it a ratio 3 x 5? As in 3 inches x 5 inches or some larger, proportional size that can be reduced to that?

Or 4 x 6?

Thank you....

Hello,
I'm new to this forum (some of you may know me as MrsOnePotato).
I'd like to join in on this collaborative project...may I have The Hermit?

Regarding size...isn't 4x6 too big? 3x5 sounds more standard to me. But I'll follow whatever the group decides.

:) Little Window

Mr. la-luna wrote: One more for the black borders group

Well i was thinking along the lines of incorporating an element from the traditional card into the one we are creating ( we could use one of the 3 biggies or even older one's or free to choose by any participant)

Wow, I take a couple days off, and the rest of you have a party.  And a true party, with broken furniture, and hurt feelings and the whole deal.  Probably even a hangover or two, and someone wondering if they really suggested that. Wow.

Ok, how about either black or white borders, but no other options.  That would allow the designer to choose which goes best with their design, but still keep a cohesiveness with the rest.  I really like Mr La-luna's idea of incorporating a traditional symbol in each card, and then freedom after that.  Even how the symbol is shown could be quite varied, large or small.  A photo or drawing or words, or....  (pink goo swished on with your toes?)  (not really, please)  The traditional symbol could be the linking element for the deck.

I was also surprised at the comments directed toward Adam.  Bluntness is good, but sometimes it's good to re-read what's been written before hitting the send button.  I do this quite often, and although the final message isn't completely what I really think, I haven't burnt any bridges, or hurt any feelings.  As for creativity, remember who thought up this forum just for us collectors!

As far as cards in the works, how about another area in this forum, at the root level, up there with 'show and tell' and 'tarot collectors forum' titled something like 'the collectors deck' and individual threads for each card, and a thread for ideas or status or whatever.  The cards could be posted and comments requested.  Or not, as the creator wants.  It could be interesting to see how a card develops. especially from the artists who have creating works of art as a major part of their lives.  To me the Fool and the Magician are very important to any deck, and I would like to see someone other than myself do them.

If I had to pick a card it would be the Chariot or the Hermit.  Either would be good, but sometimes I feel that I am the hermit, and a reversed one at that!  I would love to do the Fool, but somehow I think that is a card that needs someone who works with creation more.  Any 'art' skills I have are extremely rusty.  Actually, rusty is complementary, what's older than rusty?

To tell the truth I think that if we have a chimera as the common thread, it seems somewhat limiting to me.  But I guess I can live with it.

chi·me·ra  from http://www.dictionary.com

1. --(often initial capital letter ) a mythological, fire-breathing monster, commonly represented with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail.
2. --any similarly grotesque monster having disparate parts, esp. as depicted in decorative art.
3. --a horrible or unreal creature of the imagination; a vain or idle fancy: He is far different from the chimera your fears have made of him.
4. --Genetics. an organism composed of two or more genetically distinct tissues, as an organism that is partly male and partly female, or an artificially produced individual having tissues of several species.

I was too wordy last time, Hermit's gone.  :X  Chariot sounds good.  Can I get take a picture of my car?  (Hey, I'm only kidding!)

And remember, art is in the eye of the beholder.  So some of that crap out there is considered art (by the crappy?:D)

So happy to see Little Window (hi!) and Skad (hi!) have signed up!

I'm not asking advice. I'm just proceeding apace, talentless and clueless, if you don't like it, don't buy the deck LOL (well, but where will we get money to buy milk for the children you ask?  Not from selling MY art, that's for sure!)

Little Window wrote: Hello,
I'm new to this forum (some of you may know me as MrsOnePotato).
I'd like to join in on this collaborative project...may I have The Hermit?

Regarding size...isn't 4x6 too big? 3x5 sounds more standard to me. But I'll follow whatever the group decides.

:) Little Window

welcome to the forums MrsOnePotato! :) i've put yours as the hermit. SKAD (hopefully you read this), yours is the chariot.

ok, let's settle it at 3 x 4.5, 300 dpi (for the scans). but i'd advise you to do something a bit bigger, but still proportionate (like, say, 4.5 x 6.75 which can be reduced to 3 x 4.5) just to explain, i took 0.5 inches off the height for the numbers and card titles. :) don't include the text and numbering in the artwork (so at least we'' have uniformity thre). no theme. any medium (but if 3d and the like, take pics). so far, no deadline... as we're too few to impose a deadline? i'd like to hear (read) your thoughts if we peg it at mid-year for now.

and, any suggestions as to which chronata might take?

Oh wow, a deck with Chronata and a Potatro in..... I think it may be time to run....

I it was who suggested black borders - just because when you get scanned images to print yourself, you can't SEE the card edges.... and there was a suggestion that that would be how we'd get our copies of the deck - on line. (I would far rather BlueToy  made them up even if it cost.) I do think all the borders should be the same colour. but OK - if people prefer white (I actually find colours pop more in black ;)) the scans would need to be against a black background....

4 x 6 is a standard photo size - but so is 3 x 5, I think...

well, if you guys make something that has the proportions of 3 x 5, but bigger, it can be reduced so it fits both 3 x 5 and 4 x 6.  :) just, well, scan them at 300 dpi or higher.

you know, and this is more in the lines of those "in the long run" and "when it's actually done" kinda thoughts, maybe if there are other people interested in purchasing the said deck (i mean other than the participants) - collectors adding it to their collections and such - maybe the proceeds can go to adam to help him with maintaining the forums. i mean, he has to pay for the domain periodically, and, it does demand some effort from him to keep the forums clean (especially from those bot things), so it might be our little way of paying him back.

Been away for almost a week and return to find the deck project in full bloom. Cool!

I'm thinking I'd like to participate, but I need a call on the rules. While most of the (very little) time I have for artistic endeavor these days is dedicated to photography, I don't do photo-collage and really don't have much interest in photographic tarot. However, in a previous life (metaphorically speaking) I was quite active in art stamping and would love to do a card using that technique. But reading over the rules, the requirement that elements be "original" could well preclude stamping as an allowable technique.

So, what does everyone think? Stamping Yea or Nay?

Frankly I vote for whatever people want to do, whether it's original work or not, so art stamping is OK with me.

truthfully, I always felt that whole "must be by your own hand original work" rule was borne out of unnecessary pressure from that debate about original vs. collage etc.

In the interest of keeping this fun and non-exclusionary, I say scrap the previous rules regarding originality
