Hello everyone,
I know not everybody loves Marseille or related patterns, nor blockprinted tarots, nor trumps only sets, anyhow I thought it was time to show those prints of an engraved serie of trumps I finished a few days ago, the cards are small - about 6x9cm - and the pictures are even smaller - the frames are about (varying a bit from card to card) 6.3x3.5 cm. (cards in the Sun picture below are nearly real size). Those are linocuts - same technique than woodcut, except you use linoleum instead of wood, makes it easier for some details and trickier for other (just like wood, linoleum is made from renewable materials, so if you have concerns about sustainability don't be alarmed).
Hopefully some of you will find some interest in it - my loved one whose taste is undoubtful and a good friend tell me they're worth the work so I hope you'll share this opinion.
The backs are not designed hence not ready to be glued yet, each card is printed separately on a pre-cut heavy paper.
Main inspiration was taken from Vieville deck, hence the unusual names and ordering and mirrored S, with some liberty taken.

All advices and opinions welcome, although the engraving part is done so it likely won't be modified, and any hints about the most traditional way of finishing the cards are welcome - currently I'm trying to finish them mimicking what they did in the old times, which involves soap and a smoothing stone, but again advices are welcome.
The backs - not designed nor printed yet - are to be glued on each card (using an ancient vegetal based recipe too - which dates back to the XVIth century at least - and even maye the egyptians, how funny !)
I find it a bit awkward to name a deck other than "Tarot", also this one won't be complete - only 21+1 trumps - so let's call it "Tarot de Bertrand" or "Tarot de Paris MMX".
In case you're wondering : no it won't be colored, as it would involve too much hand work for one part, but overall because I didn't find any ancient recipes for the colors. If anyone has clues about that too, then a stenciled version may appear, one day, in an hypothetical future but it would rather be for the next set of cards I'll make.
Please keep in mind that I don't pretend to be "at the origin of the tradtion", nor "to reveal the lost pattern", nor "to actualize the art of tarot", nor anything fancy (yet at times much selling), but only to work in the spirit of the ancient cardmakers as I understand it.

truelighthWill you also sell copies of this deck? Or is it just a labor of love? Definitely, I would love to sell it when it will be properly finished (designing and glueing the backs, checking that it would last when used and shuffled without staining the other cards or the fingers, and smoothing the old way) - to get some money for sure but also to see it travel the world, that would be awesome.

!!! I forgot to mention : this is linocut - close to woodcut (same tools) but more adapted to my conditions of work for several reasons. Yes I carved and hand printed.

They look wonderful. The designs are terrific--a nice variety of simple and complex. I like the way you focus on the central iconographic element of each card. And Death's head breaks the frame! I like the titles, too. These are very very good, really stunning, Bertrand, bravo!

Hullo Bertrand.
These are fabulous!
You have done an outstanding job!
I like the little square format of the images.
Maybe you'll consider doing a small portion of the edition with color, and leave the bulk of them in black & white?
Stencil would be difficult, as it sounds like you have done each card on a separate block, rather than ganging them together.
But of course there is a tradition of hand-coloring as well.
Winsor Newton still manufactures many colors from traditional pigments, in addition to the modern ones.
And their recipe for gouache has not changed very much in 200 years.

a little advertising message to let you know there's now a website to present this deck, http://dutarot.free.fr/
plus it has got a name now : Triomphes de Paris - triumphs since it's a "major" only deck, "de Paris" since it's definitely not from Marseille.
There's a video where all the cards can be seen - at least as they appear in the prototype deck. The first decks for sale will get a burgundy back instead of the raw sienna seen in the video.

thanks a lot for your interest.
I have still some details to sort out, including box etc...
Also I'm considering the option of selling a limited number of the printed sheets, which may interest collectors and can make a cheaper possibility for those wishing to customize their decks. If any, only a limited amount of those sheets will be available.
I've got to check with the post office for the shipping costs to different locations... and still to decide a price, which is a difficult debate ! I have a large target range and still need to narrow it down (any advices in private are more than welcome)
I'll let you know ASAP anyway !

What are my chances of convincing you to at least experiment with stencil color as an option?
As I mentioned earlier, Winsor Newton gouache is basically pigment bound with gum arabic.
It's a pretty traditional recipe, and likely very similar to what the cardmakers used.
Have a look at Jacque Maroger's "The Secret Formulas and Techniques of the Masters" if you'd like to choose historically accurate pigments/colors.
I believe Kaplan explains how a varnished paper proof-print was used as a stencil. (One for each color.)
You cut the openings right on the image, so you have a perfect reference.

Actually I did find the recipes for several colors, but some of them imply waiting several months to be ready ! Though they migt be replaced by modern colors that's right, now other technical problem would arise - how well would they stay on the cards ? would they mix or stay separate from the lines ink ? would this lead me to use an oil based ink for the lines ?
You're right, they used paper for the stencils, called "imprimures", these were thick oiled sheets of papers cut to shape, coloring of the cards was called "habillage" (dressing).
The whole process is actually well documented for the big lines, but then there are the small tunings and adjustements - just for the glue, overheating or underheating may lead a pile of printed sheets to waste (it happened to me !).
Then when the technical questions are a bit sorted, there is the question of what colors go where, which - to be realized seriously - would ask perhaps as much work as the design and carving of the molds.
So regarding the colors, I don't believe it will happen on this deck for the moment

I didn't sleep last week, the night after I sent them, I hope the others will reach their destinations quickly.
Numbers I to V were sent the same day, and VI the day after, I'm amazed it reached the other side of the planet before it crossed the Channel !
It's also weird to see that number 1 arrived first despite the greatest distance.

The wrapper is excellent.
Your design is excellent.
Your engraving skill is very impressive.
I quite like your typography and layout.
And I quite like your laminated stock.
I thought it looked a bit small in the photos, but seeing it in person, it's a nice little jewel.
All in all, a very fine production!

Actually they will all have the red back, the ochre back doesn't work very well and it was tried on one of the prototypes. I'm quite happy with the red back.
Regarding the number, I don't know yet, but as I said to someone (can't remember who right now) the printing will be reduced because of how the cards are made, and I want to make more than one deck so this one will stop at some point.
If the molds can take the printings and if there is enough demand, there should be 50 of them decks, if there is even more demand, then maybe there will be around 100 of them, but at some point in the near future the price will be increased - I'll keep the same price for those six people who already reserved a deck, after that I will raise the price a bit, so the demand will certainly be reduced !
100 is a huge figure anyway, seeing how I can currently handle the manufacturing, it seems very hypothetical and I don't think I would reach it before the next ten to twenty months, but it may happen if I can give up on some other jobs.
