During one of my regular explorations of what's new in the tarot world I stumbled upon this artist who recently finished his majors that he is giving an exposition with from 7 to 21 October.

Here is the link to them http://www.daniloff-art.it/Tarocchi%20gallery/Arcani%20Maggiori.htm

Wow - I like how the art cleaves to the traditional format, and the style of antique engravings . But also it has it's own fantastic or surrealist style.

All the people seem to have fake noses or are wearing masks!

A very authentic Renaissance appearance. Much more magical in effect than all the fairy and elf attempts.

It has a familiar look, like out of a beloved but forgotten childrens book. Definitely on my wish list now.

These are really fantastic.  I've been feeling somewhat jaded lately, and I really enjoyed seeing these.  I like that the more you look at them, the more you see.

Yes, This is true - every time I look at the pictures I see more. 'The Pope' has a hat I recognize from the Emblem Books. It has something to do with the Jesuits, I think ?

Does anyone know what kind of musical instrument 'Death' is playing? It's shaped like a guitar with no neck and seems to have a spinning handle. Just guessing (for no particular reason) that maybe this is the 'hurdy-gurdy' of the Donovan song ?

This artist knows Renaissance and Tarot iconography. 'The Lovers' balanced on a snake biting it's tail - well within the bounds. 'The chariot' is a Roman emperor pulled by a Gryphon and a Unicorn, still okay. Very authentic, I say. As playful as the Emblem books yet still firmly traditional. The old is new again.

My only disapointment is that there is no naked lady in the 'World' card. Well, 'fortitude' is standing in for her I quess:)

The artist is a Russian living in Italy. I was so blown away by these cards that I spent some time looking through the gallery and searching for and following links, something I rarely do. He has many fascinating photos on flickr, and references to the Italian Renaissance can be found in other paintings too. His bio is fascinating, and throws light on his work - for example, some of the figures reflect his wife's (and his) work with the puppet theatre. The man's a creative genius - a new old master...

Just guessing (for no particular reason) that maybe this is the 'hurdy-gurdy' of the Donovan song ?It is a hurdy gurdy, you can find more images of it by searching for the french (vielle à roue) or spanish (zanfona) terms. It does have a crank wich turns a wheels that acts like a bow, only with a continuous sound.

I'm not into modern decks, but this one sure is inspiring !

"Crank" ! That's the word I was looking for. Had to give up and settle for 'spinning handle' instead. Oh well, too much Donovan in my youth 8>)

I've watched people play them.  They produce strange, unsettling sounds that contrast with the rhythmic turning of the crank.  There's other names for them in English, too.  An inspired choice for this card.

I also like the Devil as Hellmouth.

i was aware that it needs i explain better about Daniloff tarot. He produced his images in Prints A3 dimensions and are available from the artist.I have put link to comunicate with him.
The same images of Prints were reproduced on cardstok as cards in a few number of copies, dimensions 9,5x15 cm,on pearled cardstoke with a magnificent printing and they are practically unfoundable. They are signed on the card of Fool and they are inside a cardstoke illustrated cover(i have put in another link the photo).these ones i have for exchange or sell, but i would prefer the second one.
Then ,always by artist it's possible find the original, realized some by watercolours on prints on cardstoke (on another link some price).About them i know still not much, but the artist will be happy to explain.

The artist has told me that he printed a test series of a deck of  cards on the occasion of his exhibition in Russia. He printed them using a graphic studio, but did not like the result.  I assume this is the deck that Alice is selling. He is now issuing each card image printed onto A3 paper and as he controls the printing  he is  fully satisfied with the result. They are numbered and signed. The cost is 40 euros for a poster + shipping.

Daniloff must be such a perfectionist and self critic. The printed deck of which Alice had been able to acquire some copies, and which Daniloff was unhappy with, are, to my eye, well printed and would seem to do his work justice. Perhaps he prefers his artwork only circulate as large detailed prints the quality of which he himself can monitor.

Good news for those who still want a copy of the majors deck, Mr. Daniloff decided to have some more printed. I got mine yesterday and, as Adam says, they are really stunning. Contact him at the address that alice posted if you're interested.
