I'm curious as to any decks that were published in a small printing &
then were reprinted by US games or some other large company???

Wondering how often this happens?

Not sure if this is what you mean, but the Quantum Tarot that Adam originally published as a 22-card deck was expanded to 78 cards and published by Kunati.

Me see......

There's Mary-El tarot, Arcus Arcanum, Ironwing , Pirate Tarot, Butler, Javanne (or danish witch), Anna.K,  Diary of a Broken Soul

Acouple may have been self-published but there is 22 and 78 card version of them.  It seems like I keep seeing notes that decks were 'published earlier as.." but I don't have them, so I don't think about them.  :n much

The Tarot of the Crone, Tarot of the Dead, and the Transformational Tarot / Ando were all issued as limited edition, self published decks, which were later picked up by larger publishers.

I believe Chronata's All Hallows Tarot was another one, no? I thought of a couple others as I was driving home, but now can't remember them! Argh.

Not Ironwing.  Both the majors-only and the 78-card versions were published by the artist.

I wish!
I've been hunting an original with no luck.
I actually went to the artist for high res pictures &
printed my own set. (Lorena said fine as long as I didn't sell them)
I did them a little smaller than the original &
now will probably do one the same size.

The Gaian Tarot is going to be published by Llewellyn in 2011, but is available as an indie deck now.

I saw that - $59.95 a month for 5 months - or something like that.
Not saying it isn't worth it - I know some people Love this deck, but it ain't cheap!!!

What exactly is it about this deck that makes it worth that kind of price tag? Anybody got one?

The Sidhe also belongs with this group. Adam first published the majors and now Schiffer will publish the 78-card version.

And if the All Hallow's also is one of them, then the Minute Tarot by Chronata also belongs on this list. That one was first self-published and now again by Tarotconnections.

I have one. I loved it so much I bought a backup at the indie price. And I have never bought a backup before or since. This is the first deck I ever bought that made me smile every time I looked through it. It is earthly, it has a sense of humor, it celebrates REAL people and not perfect sinuous bodies (the best part of all). It can still point out negative information, giving a truly accurate reading. It rapidly became my number 1 deck.

I've heard a few people say similar things about this deck!

Doesn't exactly answer the question -
The deck comes with a Hand made bag - a talisman - a book & the deck.

I think the gaian is mainly so expensive, because of the printing cost. The limited editions of the majors only (1rst and 2nd) were printed in a limited amount and the full decks the author sells right now, must be even less sold. Especially with the mass-market version coming out. I paid around 80 to 90 dollars for my majors only. And looking at the print quality and the paper quality, I sure can understand why it costs that much. Self-publishing can be very expensive.

I know the author and I seem to remember that she didn't even earn anything on the decks she printed. Actually, while she was working on the deck, she didn't work at all. She took time off and devoted her time to painting this deck, while her husband supported her.

I always thought that it was difficult to make any money making & selling tarot cards.
It's probably far and few between that can make a living at it.
Seems most of the decks that go for big bucks become that way after they have sold out & it's never the artist the gets the "Big Bucks"
It is most often done because of the Love of Tarot & not the money.
Of course this is just my personal thoughts I really have no idea.

Yes, the cardstock is wonderful, the colors are clear and vivid, and the deck itself is quite large. I have the smaller of the limited edition sizes and I can't imagine using the large deck. She found a great printer who did an excellent job.
