Another previously unknown to me Japanese tarot, this one a 78 card deck with the full name: RK Astrology of Love - Ryuji Kagami Original Tarot. As you can see from the pictures, it comes in a presentation box that holds a box with the deck and a 92 page LWB (with full-color card illustrations) and a leather-like case.

The deck's artist is Aki Horiuchi (Ryuji Kagami is rather famous in Japan as a popular authority on various occult subjects and is credited with "writing" quite a few well-known decks).

For the most part, the deck is painted in a rather naive style that is strongly RWS inspired, the minors completely so. The majors are mostly RWS, but a few of them (e.g., the Chariot, Death and the Sun) are TDM-inspired instead. And then there're a few odd ones like Justice that have details that are...well...odd.

One other unusual element is that many of the characters that are fully clothed in the RWS minors are nude and wrapped in a scarf-like thingy. No idea why, unless it has something to do with the "astrology of love."

I couldn't find a copyright date anywhere and despite the deck giving the impression of being fairly recent (the packaging was a little the worse for wear, but the cards themselves were still in the original shrink-wrap), I couldn't find a single reference to it on the web anywhere.

Anyone else have it or know anything else about it?

Such elegant packaging for the whimsical art!  Roman numerals instead of Arabic numbers on the pips.

God I love the tush on that III of Wand.

Rather astonishingly, I won it at auction for about $22.00 (although the logistics of getting it from Japan to me added another $20 or so).

It's been conjectured that this may be a special presentation copy of the deck and that the deck itself may have been, or may in the future be, released without the fancy packaging. This is supported by the fact that the inner box with the deck and LWB was separately shrink-wrapped, as would be the case with a more traditionally packaged deck.

I'll keep my eyes open for any more copies. I imagine Chialing might be a source as well.

Well, two years later, a heads up for anyone still looking for this in the fancy presentation.

Earlier this year, I traded mine for another deck that I wanted even more and resigned myself to never seeing a copy again. Then about a month ago, a copy showed up on one of the Japan auctions and I got it. It arrived today and it is essentially a completely mint copy, the cards still shrink-wrapped. On a hunch, I checked the record of the seller and discovered that he had recently listed and sold another copy, also apparently new. So, it seems like someone may possibly have a stock of undistributed copies that they are selling one-by-one. If you're looking for one, a word to Chialing or lulukat might be in order.

Cool. (The other one I saw sold may well have gone to her agent.)

And by the way:

The published company is cybird. Is that what you want to know?
This is Ryuji Kagami's official website:
http://ryuji.tv/media.php?pg=18

And she says that site shows the boxed set was published around 2008.

Indeed - - going through google translate - Jan 6 2008 :)
